In Illinois, a man is facing serious charges after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend relentlessly for several hours, including acts of strangulation and knife-throwing, before falling asleep.

Johnnie Chiaravalle, aged 21, has been formally charged with multiple offenses, including two counts of aggravated domestic battery, domestic battery, and unlawful restraint. These charges stem from a prolonged attack on his girlfriend, as reported by the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office. Chiaravalle is currently detained and will remain in custody pending his trial.

Authorities responded to a distress call on Monday at the East Bluff Community Center located in Peoria, a central Illinois city positioned approximately 160 miles southwest of Chicago. The police had received information that a woman had been violently assaulted.

Upon arrival, officers noted that the woman’s injuries were severe: her eyes were almost completely swollen shut, and she bore numerous cuts and bruises across her legs, face, and body. The victim informed the police that the perpetrator was her boyfriend, Chiaravalle.

According to her account, he prevented her from leaving their residence and subjected her to a brutal beating lasting eight to nine hours. During this ordeal, he allegedly punched her repeatedly in the face, head, and body, resulting in a fractured nose.

The woman also reported that Chiaravalle strangled her on multiple occasions and hurled knives at her, inflicting cuts and lacerations on her legs. It was only when he eventually fell asleep that she managed to escape the house.

Police arrived at the couple’s home and met with the suspect. He reportedly “told officers he had been asleep and claimed someone else must have caused her injuries.”

When officers investigated the home, they said they “found clumps of hair” believed to have belonged to the victim, “red blood-like stains on the floor, and multiple steak and folding knives.”  Chiaravalle was arrested and booked into jail.

The woman — as of Tuesday — was “hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries,” police said.

Chiaravalle is expected in court for an arraignment on May 13.
