Several University of Iowa students wounded in downtown shooting after fight erupts near campus

In a shocking incident early Sunday morning, gunfire shattered the peace of Iowa City’s lively Pedestrian Mall, located near the University of Iowa. The shooting resulted in several injuries, including among the student community, while the suspect remains at large, prompting a swift police response to secure the scene.

Authorities were alerted at approximately 1:46 a.m. to a disturbance in the 100 block of East College Street, an area known for its vibrant nightlife and proximity to the university, as reported by Iowa City Public Safety. Upon their arrival, officers were greeted by the sound of gunshots.

Emergency services quickly transported multiple individuals to local hospitals for treatment of injuries sustained during the incident.

Law enforcement officials have identified five victims of the shooting. Among these, one person is in critical condition, whereas the other four are reported to be in stable condition.

The Iowa City Police Department released images showing five persons of interest in connection with the shooting.

The University of Iowa has confirmed that some of the injured individuals are students, as stated in an official announcement from the institution.

“While the investigation is in its early stages, there are no indications any university students were the intended victims,” it added.

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. Police later released photos of five persons of interest in connection with the shooting.
