Iran's threats to skip 2nd round of US peace talks are 'posturing': Pakistani sources

ISLAMABAD — Although Iran initially stated it would not participate in a second round of peace talks on Sunday, it appears now open to the idea, according to Pakistani insiders who spoke with The Post on Monday. The initial reluctance seems to be a strategic maneuver to secure the most favorable terms.

“The current tough stance is simply a tactic to gain the upper hand when the next round of talks takes place,” explained a source familiar with discussions involving the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson.

As of Monday afternoon, Iran had not reached a definitive decision on whether it would join the next round of negotiations, the source noted.

“At this moment, no final decision has been made regarding a second round,” the source stated. “Once a decision is reached, we will provide the necessary details.”

The individual emphasized a balanced outlook, saying, “We remain neither hopeful nor doubtful, just realistic.”

Islamabad continues to hold the trust of both U.S. and Iranian officials as a reliable mediator.

“Pakistan remains the sole trustworthy mediator, which means process is on and Islamabad will be the venue whenever a final decision is taken,” the source said.
