The latest cinematic offering from Antoine Fuqua, the Michael Jackson biopic titled “Michael,” has not been met with much enthusiasm from critics. Many reviewers have expressed their opinions quite bluntly, and a look at Looper’s analysis can shed light on their perspectives.

Featuring Jaafar Jackson, the real-life nephew of the pop icon, “Michael” by the director of “Training Day” charts the rise of Michael Jackson to pop stardom, culminating in his iconic 1988 “Bad” tour. However, the film chooses to highlight Jackson’s professional achievements over the more controversial aspects of his life, which any follower of his history will notice are largely absent.

This decision has not won over many critics, and judging by the current reviews, “Michael” may not join the ranks of top-tier biopics. Whether it will achieve commercial success as one of the highest-earning musician biopics remains to be seen.

The film could have delved into some of the more complex chapters of Jackson’s life. Yet, after undergoing costly reshoots amounting to $15 million, the focus remains on his ascent during the “Bad” era.

This choice has not sat well with critics. However, it’s worth noting that Jackson’s albums often faced mixed reviews yet still achieved massive sales. Thus, this lighter portrayal of the King of Pop’s life might resonate with audiences and perform well at the box office. At present, critics have not shied away from giving their candid thoughts, which you can explore further through Looper’s coverage.

Michael only covers part of the story

“Michael” is set to hit theaters on April 24.

It’s an approach that clearly hasn’t endeared the movie to the critics. Then again, Jackson’s discography was also somewhat uneven when it comes to reviews, and he still managed to sell boatloads of albums. As such, it’s possible that even this comparatively light and fluffy take on the late King of Pop’s life will find its audience and succeed at the box office. For now, however, critics who have reviewed the movie have had some pretty direct things to say — and watching Looper’s video above is a quick way to get up to speed about what they’re saying.
