Irvine police search for suspect in $3K Gelson’s wine theft

A fine appreciation for upscale wine has led one suspect into serious trouble after Irvine police reported that he absconded with over $2,600 worth of premium wine from a Gelson’s supermarket in the area.

Authorities are now seeking the community’s assistance in identifying the individual, who was captured on surveillance cameras during the incident.

In a playful Instagram update, the Irvine Police Department humorously remarked: “You could say he took the phrase ‘grab life by the glass’ a little too seriously. At those prices, that’s not just a poor decision, it’s a full-bodied felony.”

The suspect is described as a Black man dressed in a white long-sleeved dress shirt, dark trousers, brown shoes, and glasses at the time of the theft.

Police have shared video snapshots and are encouraging anyone who may recognize him to step forward with information.

Police have released video images and are urging anyone who recognizes him to come forward.

â€œIf you recognize him, don’t bottle it up,” the department added, directing tips to Detective Drake at JDrake@cityofirvine.org “so we can put a cork in this case.”

Under California Penal Code 487, theft of property valued above $950 qualifies as grand theft.

With the alleged haul exceeding $2,600, the charge falls into “wobbler” territory, meaning it can be prosecuted as either a misdemeanor or a felony.

If filed as a felony, the suspect could face 16 months, two years, or three years behind bars.

Fines may reach up to $10,000, along with mandatory restitution to Gelson’s for the stolen goods.

A court could also impose a restraining order barring the individual from entering Gelson’s locations for up to two years.

If treated as a misdemeanor, the maximum penalty would be up to one year in county jail.
