Several beaches located just south of Sydney have been shut down after a deceased whale was discovered onshore, raising concerns about potential shark activity.
The whale was found stranded on the rocks at Era in Sydney’s Royal National Park. Beachgoers celebrating Anzac Day were advised to avoid entering the water.
Beaches affected by the closure include Garie, Wattamolla, Era, and Burning Palms.
Surf Life Saving NSW has issued a warning to both locals and visitors, urging them to stay out of the water due to safety hazards.
The species of the whale remains unidentified at this time.
Lifesavers are actively monitoring the situation, utilizing drones and jet skis for surveillance over the water.
Volunteer surf lifesavers remain on duty at patrolled locations in the area including Garie, Era and Burning Palms.
