GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Authorities apprehended Orrin Glenn Newsome, 66, yesterday, following allegations that he assaulted a woman with a cane, resulting in the loss of her front teeth.

According to the Gainesville Police Department’s account, an officer arrived at the scene around 8 p.m. on April 24, where an altercation between Newsome and the victim reportedly escalated inside their residence. Newsome is accused of striking the victim twice on the head with a walking cane, leading to the loss of her two front teeth. In response, the victim is said to have pushed the cane back at Newsome, injuring his forehead.

The officer noted the presence of blood droplets in the hallway and on the cane, corroborating the victim’s description of the incident. Conversely, Newsome claimed the altercation took place while he was on the bed in the bedroom.

Newsome now faces charges of domestic aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. His criminal history includes eight non-violent felony convictions, two non-violent misdemeanor convictions, and two traffic violations. Previous domestic battery charges against him were dismissed in 2020 and 2021. Judge Donna Keim has ordered him to be held without bail until a hearing on the State Attorney’s Office’s request to detain him without bail until the trial. Should the motion be denied, bail will be determined at the hearing.

This report is based on information provided by law enforcement agencies. The charges outlined derive from arrest reports and/or court records and remain allegations. All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
