Almost a year has passed since a deadly shooting erupted in a peaceful Baldwin Park neighborhood, and authorities have now unveiled chilling bodycam footage and audio that capture the frantic moments when a gunman opened fire on law enforcement.
Eduardo Roberto Medina Berumen, aged 22, stands accused of the murders of 35-year-old officer Samuel Riveros and 43-year-old father of two, Darius Wong.
Berumen is currently facing several charges, including two counts of murder, and is expected to appear in court this Thursday.
The tragic incident took place on May 31, 2025, when officers were dispatched to the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue following reports of a shooting.
Wong, who had been fatally shot, was en route to a housewarming party at the time of his death.
The Baldwin Park Police Department has released footage showing the suspect opening fire as soon as the first officer arrived on the scene.
Video shows the officer returning fire before rushing to assist another officer injured by shattered glass after a patrol car was struck by bullets.
Bodycam footage from Riveros, a nine-year veteran of Baldwin Park Police Department, captures him arriving moments later and urging nearby residents to get out of danger.
As he moved along the sidewalk, he was shot.
Police Chief Robert Lopez said the gunman continued firing after hitting Riveros, blocking officers from immediately reaching both the wounded officer and Wong.
“After striking the officer, Berumen continued firing rounds at the other officers, preventing them from immediately pulling the wounded officer and the initial victim to safety for medical treatment,” Lopez said in the YouTube video.
Officers eventually reached Riveros and rushed him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Even after being hit by police gunfire, Berumen remained armed with a rifle as officers confronted him.
Audio from the scene captures repeated commands: “Drop the gun!”
He was ultimately taken into custody.
The department released the footage as part of a 15-minute video detailing the incident, offering a stark look at the deadly encounter that claimed the lives of both a veteran officer and an innocent father.
