Wet and windy start to May as storms sweep nation's south

As the week concludes, southern Australia is bracing for a shift in weather patterns, with rain, gusty winds, and thunderstorms predicted to sweep through the region. This marks the end of the recent spell of warm and dry conditions.

The catalyst for this change is a low-pressure system that is propelling a cold front and trough from west to east, starting today. This system is expected to bring a series of showers, thunderstorms, and strong winds as it progresses across southern Australia.

Residents should be prepared for potential damaging gusts, particularly in parts of South Australia and western Victoria on Saturday. These winds are anticipated to extend to elevated areas in eastern Victoria and southeastern New South Wales by Sunday.

Rain will spread across a wide stretch of the south, although totals will vary.(Weatherzone )

The passage of this system will also lead to a notable temperature drop, with predictions indicating a decrease of around 5 to 10 degrees across much of the southern region. In Adelaide, temperatures are expected to fall to approximately 19 degrees on Sunday and Monday, following a climb into the high 20s earlier in the week.

Temperatures are expected to ease by around 5 to 10 degrees across much of the south as the system moves through.

Adelaide is forecast to drop back to about 19 degrees on Sunday and Monday after reaching the high 20s earlier in the week.

Meanwhile, Melbourne is expected to ease from about 26 degrees on Friday to 22 degrees by Sunday, while Hobart will fall from the mid-20s to around 19 by Monday.

Canberra is also set to cool, slipping from the low 20s over the weekend to about 17 degrees by Tuesday.
