Nicotine pouches hit by SA crackdown.

Health experts are urging for tighter regulations on nicotine pouches, warning that they are being marketed with “youth-attractive branding” and sold online with ease in ways that risk repeating the same health concerns linked to vaping.
The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has called on the government and enforcement agencies to shut loopholes that allow unapproved nicotine products to enter the market and get sold online effortlessly.

Associate Professor Julian Rait, Vice President of the AMA, has expressed concerns over nicotine pouches being marketed with designs that appeal to younger audiences and sold online with minimal restrictions, even though they lack therapeutic approval in Australia.

Professor Rait endorsed the proposed changes by the Therapeutic Goods Administration aimed at closing loopholes that permit access to unauthorized nicotine pouches through existing access schemes and personal importation methods.

The AMA highlighted that the rapid rise in sales of these uncontrolled products underscores a significant gap in the government’s regulation and enforcement of synthetic nicotine.

“Without robust, technology-neutral regulations and cohesive national enforcement, suppliers will continue to exploit regulatory loopholes,” Professor Rait commented.

He emphasized the necessity for stronger protective measures, including efficient online compliance and takedown procedures, clear health warnings, child-proof packaging, and enhanced tracking of adverse incidents and poisoning cases to guide ongoing regulatory efforts.

The call comes the same week that new laws have come into effect in Britain, barring children aged 17 and under from ever legally purchasing cigarettes in their lifetime.

Moreover, British authorities have been granted substantial new powers to oversee the flavors, packaging, and presentation of vaping and nicotine products to diminish their attractiveness to minors.
