2 US troops missing during 'Africa Lion' training exercises in Morocco

LAGOS, Nigeria — In a concerning development, two U.S. service members have gone missing in the southwestern region of Morocco. The disappearance occurred during the annual multinational military exercises hosted in the North African nation, as confirmed by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) on Sunday.

These exercises, known as African Lion, involve a collaboration between the United States, Morocco, and several other participating countries. In response to the incident, AFRICOM has coordinated a search and rescue operation in hopes of locating the missing personnel.

“The incident is currently under investigation, and efforts to find the missing individuals are ongoing,” AFRICOM stated in their official release.

The unfortunate event took place on May 2 near the Cap Draa Training Area close to Tan Tan, a location by the Atlantic Ocean. The African Lion exercise began in April and is scheduled to conclude in early May.

African Lion stands out as the U.S. military’s largest annual joint exercise on the African continent. The event typically attracts high-ranking military officials from the United States and key African partners, emphasizing its significance.

According to U.S. military officials, this yearly engagement is designed to enhance regional security cooperation. It also serves as a critical platform for bolstering the readiness of the forces involved, preparing them to respond efficiently to global crises.
