GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In a disturbing incident near the University of Florida campus, 38-year-old Daniel Phillip Myrick was apprehended early this morning. He faces allegations of assaulting a man, resulting in severe injuries, including a significant portion of the victim’s ear being left severely damaged.
Authorities from the Gainesville Police Department were called to the scene around 1:15 a.m. on May 3. Upon arrival at the 1700 block of West University Avenue, they discovered the victim suffering from a deep cut on his eyebrow, which was bleeding heavily, a swollen eye, and a severe laceration to his ear.
Numerous bystanders reportedly pointed to Myrick as the aggressor, claiming he had repeatedly struck the victim. The victim himself also accused Myrick of the attack.
According to police reports, Myrick made an unsolicited admission, claiming he had knocked someone out.
After being read his Miranda rights, Myrick allegedly chose not to disclose further details about the incident to the officer on duty.
Myrick, whose address is listed as the former St. Francis House, has been charged with felony battery. He has nine felony convictions (two violent), 22 misdemeanor convictions (one violent), and three criminal traffic convictions; he has served two state prison sentences, with his most recent release in 2020. Judge Adam Lee set bail at $75,000.
