Palisades arsonist became 'fixated' with Luigi Mangione before deadly blaze: prosecutors

The individual accused of starting the devastating Palisades Fire had reportedly become “fixated” on Luigi Mangione prior to the tragic incident, prosecutors revealed. The suspect allegedly suggested that the fire was a result of “resentment of the rich.”

Jonathan Rinderknecht, 30, was said to be obsessed with Mangione, a healthcare executive accused in a separate case. Court documents indicate that Rinderknecht frequently searched phrases like “free Luigi Mangione” and “let’s take down all the billionaires” online.

In the days leading up to the fire, Rinderknecht, who worked as an Uber driver, allegedly expressed his anger about Mangione’s arrest to his passengers.

“Several of the defendant’s Uber passengers on December 31, 2024, and January 1, 2025, described him as angry, intense, and erratic in his driving. He ranted about being ‘pissed off at the world,’ Luigi Mangione, capitalism, and vigilantism,” the prosecutors stated in a trial memorandum.

When questioned about his motive for starting the fire, Rinderknecht reportedly indicated that it stemmed from “resentment of the rich enjoying their money while ‘we’re basically being enslaved by them,'” drawing parallels to the crime Mangione was charged with, according to the memorandum.

Rinderknecht has pleaded not guilty to multiple federal arson charges. The inferno, which he is accused of igniting, destroyed 7,000 homes and businesses, resulted in $150 billion in damages, and claimed 12 lives in early 2025.

The alleged firebug has been jailed without bail since his arrest last October.
