Author Craig Silvey admits child exploitation crimes

Renowned author Craig Silvey has admitted guilt to charges of possessing and distributing child exploitation material, while a separate charge of creating such material has been dismissed.

Silvey, 43, was first charged in January after detectives from Western Australian Police’s Child Abuse Squad raided his Fremantle home, allegedly catching him communicating online with child exploitation offenders and seizing his electronic devices.

The father of three faced additional accusations, including the production of child exploitation content between February and June 2022, and possessing more material on January 12 of this year.

These supplementary charges have now been dropped. However, Silvey has confessed to the remaining charges related to possession and distribution of child exploitation material from incidents in January.

Silvey is widely celebrated for his 2009 coming-of-age novel, “Jasper Jones,” which is hailed as a contemporary Australian classic. The book has been adapted into a film and various theatrical productions.

He has also been widely recognised for other books, including Rhubarb, Honeybee, which won the Australian Indie Book Award in 2021, and the children’s novel Runt, which was also made into a film.

In response to the charges, publishers Allen & Unwin and Fremantle Press, known for releasing his book “Rhubarb,” ceased promoting his works, leading to the removal of most of his titles from reading lists nationwide.

Silvey remains on bail and is scheduled to appear in the District Court on July 3 for sentencing.
