Houston restaurateur suspected of killing pregnant wife and two children before taking his own life

A tragic incident unfolded in Texas as a prominent restaurateur and former pharmaceutical executive reportedly shot his pregnant wife and two children before ending his own life, according to local authorities.

Police reports and statements from family members identified the deceased as Matthew Mitchell, a 52-year-old Houston restaurant owner, his 39-year-old pregnant wife, Thy Mitchell, and their two children, an 8-year-old daughter and a 4-year-old son. A babysitter discovered the bodies at their residence around 5:30 p.m. on Monday.

According to a report from FOX 26 Houston, investigators believe that Matthew Mitchell was responsible for the deaths of his family before he turned the gun on himself.

Details from the Houston Fire Department reveal that the children were found deceased in their beds, though the exact timing of the fatalities remains uncertain.

Matthew Mitchell, who owned and operated the popular restaurant Traveler’s Table, was an alumnus of Emory University. His educational journey also included studies in France, Italy, and at Oxford University in England, as outlined on the restaurant’s website.

After working as a journalist in London, Paris and New York City, he entered the pharmaceutical industry and led clinical research company Texas Center for Drug Development, Inc. as president and CEO, according to the site. More than a decade later, he opened his first restaurant.

Thy Mitchell, who served as co-owner of Traveler’s Table and a board member of the Texas Restaurant Association’s Houston chapter, grew up in the city as a first-generation Vietnamese-American, the website noted.

After graduating from the University of Houston and Penn State University, she held human relations leadership roles at three Fortune 500 companies in the hospitality and retail industries, according to the website.
