Family denied entry at Bay Area’s Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse over dress code

A family planning to commemorate a birthday at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in the Bay Area found themselves denied entry this week, alleging discrimination related to the restaurant’s dress code policy.

Against All Odds, a TikTok influencer with 1.3 million followers, accused the renowned steakhouse of selectively enforcing its dress code. The creator reported that her 13-year-old son, along with six others from their party, were refused service citing a dress code infringement.

The TikTok creator highlighted inconsistencies in the restaurant’s policy application, pointing out that her sister was denied entry for wearing a tracksuit, despite having worn similar attire there without issue in the past.

In a video titled “Ruth Chris Walnut Creek Ruined My Son’s 13th Birthday Dinner,” the creator is seen in a heated discussion with a Ruth’s Chris employee, urging the staff to explicitly include “tracksuit” on the dress code notice.

Responding to the request, the employee explained, “The verbiage doesn’t specifically say tracksuit, but I could add the word tracksuit right here,” referring to a sign that bans baseball caps, gym or athletic wear, tank tops, clothing with offensive language, revealing clothing, clothing with visible undergarments, and pool attire.

The creator pressed further, stating, “You should, because it doesn’t say that right here.”

“You should, cause it doesn’t say that right here,” the creator argued.

The employee went on to explain that they don’t need to go into detail on why the specific wording doesn’t say tracksuit.

The Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in Walnut Creek confirmed to The California Post that it has a business casual dress policy, which bans sweatpants, athletic wear, see-through clothing, and bare skin-showing clothing.

The video poster refused an offer from a different employee to put the family at the bar because she said she did not want to split the family up. She also condemned the restaurant and pledged to post the interaction online.

“We won’t be coming here anymore, and just to be clear, I will be making [the interaction] very public,” she said.

“This evening as soon as we walked in the woman who stated she was the manager immediately gave my family a once over and seemed to turn her nose up while asking if my sister who was standing in our group was with us,” she added in the video’s caption.

“I said ‘um yeaaaa’ and she proceeded to say we could not eat in the dining area with her dressed like that. I asked what was different from February when we were here and she disregarded my question. To make matters worse I look behind me and there is someone seated in the main dining area with an all black hoodie on which the policy the lady was holding in our face says is unacceptable,” she said.

Commenters on the creator’s video told her she was wrong.

“A track suit is athletic wear,” a comment with over 1,000 likes said.

“Thank you Ruth Chris!” another said.

“I’m sorry you had a bad experience, but you are in the wrong. 100%,” a third stated.

Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse cracked down on diners’ attire starting last month.

Parent company Darden Restaurants, which operates 162 restaurants across the globe, warned its guests that the vibe is strictly “business casual,” and requires “proper attire.”

The steakhouse chain was established by Ruth Fertel in 1965 and is known for its self-professed recipe for success: “Perfect steak, warm hospitality and good times that never stop rolling.”

The California Post reached out to Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse and TikTok creator Against All Odds for comment on the incident.
