Bonnie Tyler recovering after emergency intestinal surgery

Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler, renowned for her 1980s hits “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero,” has been placed in an induced coma following emergency surgery.

WASHINGTON — Reports indicate that Bonnie Tyler underwent urgent surgery in Portugal and is currently in an induced coma as part of her recovery process.

The iconic singer, aged 74, was admitted to a hospital in Faro, Portugal, for immediate intestinal surgery. This was confirmed in an official statement released on Wednesday, May 6. Tyler owns a residence in Portugal, which is where she has been recuperating.

“We regret to inform you that Bonnie is in the hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she owns a home, due to emergency intestinal surgery,” the statement announced. “The procedure was successful, and she is now on her way to recovery. We understand that her family, friends, and fans will be deeply concerned and are hopeful for her speedy and complete recovery.”

A representative speaking to Entertainment Weekly on Thursday confirmed that Tyler is currently in an induced coma to facilitate her healing process.

Details about the specific nature of the surgery have not been disclosed by Tyler’s team.

The Welsh singer is most known for her 1980s hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero.” Her early breakthrough came through hits like “Lost in France” and “It’s a Heartache.” She became the first British female artist to debut at number one on the UK Albums Chart and remains the only Welsh artist to have a number one on the UK Singles Chart.

In 2024, the singer told “Good Morning America” that she still gets “excited” when “Total Eclipse of the Heart” comes on the radio, especially if there’s an actual eclipse.

“Every time the eclipse comes, everyone all over the world, they play ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ and I never get tired of singing it,” she told GMA at the time.

She has released 18 studio albums throughout her career. Her last album “The Best is Yet to Come” was released in 2021.

Tyler is scheduled to perform in Malta on May 22 at the SummerLUST Music Festival. Additionally, she has tour dates in Germany, Hungary, Czechia, Scotland and Turkey.
