Fate of Aussie virus cruise passengers revealed

A new warning has emerged from the nation at the epicenter of a virus outbreak linked to a cruise ship.

Smarttraveller says hantavirus, which is spread through contact with infected rodents, “continues to be a risk in Argentina, including in and around Buenos Aires and northern Patagonia.”

The outbreak has claimed the lives of three individuals, raising concerns.

The four Australian citizens, one permanent resident and a New Zealand national are expected to leave the Canary Islands, where passengers have finally begun to disembark, later today and touch down in Perth on Tuesday.

A government representative disclosed that consular officers from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, stationed in Tenerife and Canberra, are actively coordinating the response. Meanwhile, efforts are underway between the Commonwealth and state authorities to manage health and transportation logistics.

“This situation is different from COVID-19. The public’s risk remains low, so there is no cause for fear or panic,” stated WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
