NEW YORK – As the nation gears up for its 250th celebration, The New York Historical Society has introduced a prestigious $250,000 award to honor those enhancing public understanding of history. Named after philanthropist, financier, and Baltimore Orioles owner David M. Rubenstein, the David M. Rubenstein Prize for the Advancement of American History is set to make a significant impact.

The prize is open to a broad range of individuals, inviting nominations not only from historians but also from educators, filmmakers, podcasters, and cultural organization leaders.

In a statement released Monday, Rubenstein highlighted the prize’s purpose: “The Rubenstein Prize aims to commend those who tell our national story with accuracy and engagement, helping Americans connect with their heritage and understand the importance of civic duties. Learning from history equips us to recognize successful strategies and avoid past errors.”

The inaugural panel of judges will feature esteemed Pulitzer Prize winners Annette Gordon-Reed, Jon Meacham, and Beverly Gage. The recipient of the award will be revealed in the fall.
