Microsoft Edge is set to introduce an innovative feature that enables its Copilot AI chatbot to extract information from all active tabs. Users can engage with Copilot to inquire about content across their tabs, compare products, summarize articles, and more, enhancing their browsing experience.
According to Microsoft’s announcement, users can customize their experience by selecting or excluding certain features. Additionally, the company is phasing out Copilot Mode, which previously accessed tab information and performed tasks like making reservations. These functions have been integrated into the “Browse with Copilot” tool, streamlining the user interface.
Edge is also getting a suite of new AI enhancements. One such feature, “Study and Learn,” transforms articles into study sessions or interactive quizzes. Another tool converts tabs into AI-generated podcasts, akin to those available on NotebookLM. Furthermore, an AI writing assistant will appear as users start typing on web pages, offering writing support.
Copilot can also be granted access to your browsing history to deliver “relevant, high-quality answers,” as per Microsoft. The desktop and mobile versions of Copilot in Edge will feature “long-term memory,” allowing for personalized responses based on past interactions. When opening a new tab, users will encounter a revamped page that merges chat, search, and navigation features, alongside the Journeys feature, which categorizes browsing history for easy access.
An update for Edge’s mobile app will enable screen sharing with Copilot, facilitating discussions about on-screen content. Microsoft ensures users will see “clear visual cues” indicating Copilot’s activity, whether it’s taking actions, assisting, listening, or viewing, providing transparency and control over the interaction.
