Canada gives tiny sentence to trucker who killed Olympic figure skater mom by speeding into her car during 26 hour shift

A Canadian truck driver has received a sentence of just two and a half years in prison for causing the death of a cherished Olympic figure skater.

On Wednesday, Sukhwinder Sidhu was sentenced after admitting his guilt in February for the tragic incident that resulted in the death of 31-year-old Alexandra Paul and the injury of her 10-month-old son. The crash occurred on August 22, 2023, in Melancthon Township, Ontario.

During the time of the fatal accident, Sidhu was on a marathon 26-hour work shift and had been driving continuously for nearly 16 hours. His vehicle collided with Paul’s car on County Road 124, as reported by CTV News during court proceedings.

The court also revealed that Sidhu, who faces a seven-year driving prohibition, was speeding when he entered a construction zone and crashed into stationary vehicles.

The crash involved seven vehicles in total, with Paul’s car being propelled into a ditch after being struck by the truck.

Sidhu was traveling at 107 kilometers per hour, approximately 65 mph, in a zone where the construction speed limit was clearly marked at 60 kilometers per hour, or about 35 mph, according to the outlet.

Paul’s son, whom she shares with her husband and fellow Olympic figure skater, Mitch Islam, was pulled out of the wreckage by Sidhu and taken to the hospital with a broken leg, the report added.

During Sidhu’s sentencing hearing, Paul’s family delivered emotional victim impact statements about the Olympian mother who became a lawyer later in life.

The crash left the couple’s 10-month-old son with a broken leg

Her stricken husband, with whom she performed on the ice, described his bond with his late wife as ‘unbreakable,’ and that because she died, their son ‘has been stripped of her enduring love,’ Islam told the court.

‘He’ll have to hear about how much she loved him. He will only know from stories about how amazing she was,’ he said.

Paul’s mother also noted her daughter’s outstanding personality, adding that she had her whole world ahead of her.

‘What was taken from Alex hurts me more than what was taken from me,’ she said. ‘The world is not the same to me anymore.’

The skater’s father spoke directly to Sidhu, stating: ‘What happened that day was absolutely soul crushing for all of us and shouldn’t have happened.’

‘She was simply amazing and had such a bright future… I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye. I couldn’t give her another hug. She was just gone.’

Before he was sentenced, Sidhu addressed the court, taking full responsibility for the fatal crash and apologizing to the victims involved.

The convicted criminal touched on him being a father to young children himself, stating he ‘cannot imagine the pain’ Paul’s son will face without her in his life, Sidhu stated.

‘I know there is nothing I can say that will fix this or make the grief any better. I understand that an apology can never be enough for a loss like this,’ he said through tears.

‘To every person who was injured or traumatized that day, I am deeply sorry. I know the pain and impact of what happened did not end when the crash ended,’ Sidhu continued.

The judge said he came to the decision of how long Sidhu should spend in jail after taking his character into consideration, including his not having a prior criminal record and strong family ties.

However, the judge also recognized the truck driver’s driving record, which included speeding in marked construction zones.

Paul started her career on the ice as a young figure skater at the Mariposa School of Skating in Barrie, Ontario, according to her obituary.

The rink was a very special place for her, as she met the love of her life, Islam, there.

‘They formed a beautiful ice dance team, soon winning the Canadian Junior Ice Dance Championship, and a Silver Medal at the World Junior Figure Skating Championships,’ it continued.

She competed on the ice at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

After she hung up her skates, Paul was determined to become a lawyer and soon completed her law degree at the University of Windsor.

She then moved on to work as an associate lawyer at Barriston Law, where ‘she loved the challenge and the work,’ her obituary stated.

Paul and Islam tied the knot in 2021, and in 2022, they welcomed their precious son Charlie.

Although she was such an accomplished woman in her career, Paul has been remembered as an outstanding mother who cherished that role over more than anything.

‘Motherhood was her biggest joy. She embraced it with all the love and passion she had.’
