The perpetrators are reaching out to targets via social media and messaging applications, often posing as government officials, law enforcement personnel, delivery service representatives, or individuals promoting financial ventures. In numerous instances, victims have been persuaded to send or transfer substantial sums of money under the guise of handling “packages,” paying “fees,” or ensuring “secure transactions.”
These fraudulent schemes demonstrate a high level of organization and can involve various tactics:
- Video calls to appear legitimate
- Fake tracking information or package delivery claims
- Requests for cash, wire transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency
- Threats, pressure tactics, or promises of financial gain
The High Springs Police Department is actively probing two significant cases where victims have incurred losses amounting to thousands of dollars due to these scams.
