Sony recently found itself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons following a social media post about its AI Camera Assistant on the Xperia 1 III. The tech giant is now attempting to clear the air regarding the capabilities of this feature. Contrary to assumptions, Sony asserts that the AI Camera Assistant does not alter photos directly; instead, it provides users with suggestions influenced by various factors like lighting, depth, and subject. When you aim the camera at an object, the assistant offers four options to adjust exposure, color, and background blur.
In a promotional video, Sony mentions that the AI Camera Assistant can propose “the most photogenic angle.” However, the video footage merely displays a suggestion to zoom in, which is not synonymous with recommending an optimal camera angle.
Despite efforts to showcase the AI’s prowess, the examples Sony shared on X, though an improvement over their May 14th attempts, still fall short. While they avoid the overly washed-out appearance of a prior sandwich photo or the overly brightened portrait in a meadow, the current suggestions in the sample grid remain flawed. The first option is overly saturated, the second appears flat and overly processed, the third gives the impression of a Photoshopped image, and the fourth option has excessive contrast.
For Xperia 1 III users, the wisest course of action might be to sidestep the AI Camera Assistant’s suggestions for the time being.
