Alex Murdaugh sues South Carolina clerk who interfered with jury that found him guilty of killing his wife and son

Alex Murdaugh, who was recently released from his conviction for the murder of his wife and son, has taken legal action against the South Carolina clerk accused of tampering with the jury in his original trial. This lawsuit comes just days after his conviction was overturned.

The former attorney, known for defrauding clients out of millions, has filed a federal lawsuit seeking $600,000 from Becky Hill, the former clerk of Colleton County. Murdaugh alleges Hill attempted to influence the jury to deliver a guilty verdict for the 2021 murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul.

Becky Hill, who was previously found guilty of obstruction of justice, perjury, and misconduct in office, received a probation sentence last year. This legal action against her follows the state supreme court’s recent decision to overturn Murdaugh’s conviction, citing Hill’s interference as unjustly impacting the trial.

Despite the overturned conviction, prosecutors have expressed their intention to retry the 57-year-old Murdaugh. As the legal proceedings continue, this case remains a high-profile example of the complex interplay between justice and misconduct.

Prosecutors have said they plan to retry Murdaugh, 57.
