Man fatally shot blocks from Yankee Stadium

On Sunday night, a 34-year-old man lost his life after being shot in the back near Yankee Stadium in The Bronx. This tragic event occurred just minutes before another fatal incident involving a 29-year-old man who was stabbed on the opposite side of the borough, as reported by the police.

Authorities identified the shooting victim as Javan Jones, who was gunned down around 9:35 p.m. outside an apartment complex on East 161st Street, close to Courtlandt Avenue in Concourse Village. This location is approximately half a mile from the well-known major league baseball stadium.

After the shooting, Jones was rushed to Lincoln Medical Center, where he unfortunately did not survive his injuries, according to police reports.

As of late Monday afternoon, investigators had yet to determine a motive for the shooting, and no arrests had been made.

Javan Jones was shot in the back late Sunday in front of an apartment building on East 161 Street near Courtlandt Avenue in Concourse Village, police said.

Jones was a resident of NYCHA’s Carver Houses in East Harlem, though he was often seen in the neighborhood where the shooting took place. A local deli worker, who had encountered Jones hours before the incident, recalled seeing him earlier that day around noon or 1 p.m., but chose to remain anonymous.

“I saw him yesterday….about 12 [noon], 1 p.m.,” said the worker, who did not identify himself.

“Man, that’s crazy. That was unexpected,” he said of Jones’ death.

A 49-year-old resident said she’s concerned about increasing violence as the weather warms up.

“Summer time is coming, and it’s going to get hot over here,” she said. “Nobody knows how to communicate, everything is about disrespect.”

The shooting came just minutes before another man was stabbed to death in the West Farms section of the borough, police said.

That victim, 29, who has not yet been identified, was stabbed repeatedly around 9:40 p.m. opposite an apartment building on West Farms Road near Rodman Place, authorities said.

He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

No arrests had been made by Monday afternoon, while the motive remained under investigation.

Overall, felony crime in The Bronx is down by about 11 percent so far this year, according to the latest NYPD data.

The NYPD officially split The Bronx last week into two patrol boroughs — a “major restructuring” that will add nearly 200 more officers to the northernmost borough.
