Moulton: 'We've Got to Cut Our Losses and Go Home' with Iran, Who 'Is Under Some Economic Pressure'

During an appearance on “CNN News Central” this past Wednesday, Representative Seth Moulton of Massachusetts offered a candid assessment of the ongoing situation with Iran, emphasizing the economic strain the nation currently faces. Moulton urged a pragmatic shift in strategy, stating, “We’ve got to cut our losses and go home.”

Reflecting on the broader context of the conflict, Moulton criticized the trajectory of the war, indicating its consistent failures. He noted a surprising realization by the Trump administration, which has started to reconsider its stance. “They’ve backed off, seeking a deal with Iran,” he remarked, clarifying that it is the U.S., not Iran, that is pushing for negotiations. According to Moulton, this pivot represents the most viable option, as further escalation could entangle the U.S. in a deeper and more intractable involvement. “At this point, we’re losing the war,” he asserted, advocating for a withdrawal.

Moulton further argued that the U.S. lacks substantial leverage in the situation. He recommended entrusting negotiations to seasoned professionals from the State Department rather than relying on individuals from the President’s inner circle. “We need people who have negotiated with Iran for years, who understand the levers they can pull,” he emphasized, highlighting the importance of expertise in diplomacy. He noted that Iran’s economic challenges present a critical pressure point in negotiations.

The congressman also warned of the strategic risks if Iran gains control over the Strait of Hormuz. He stressed the necessity for the U.S. to secure a more favorable deal than what the current administration seems to be pursuing. “They need to negotiate a much better deal,” Moulton concluded, underscoring the stakes involved in the diplomatic efforts.
