Hailing from a modest suburb in Sydney, Russell Crowe’s journey to becoming an acclaimed Academy Award-winning actor is truly remarkable. Yet, alongside his celebrated acting career and extensive filmography, Crowe, now 62, has also garnered a reputation for his fiery demeanor.
Over the years, Crowe has candidly acknowledged his tendency to frequently tell people to “get lost” and remove themselves from his life. His temper has led to various confrontations involving BBC executives, journalists, hotel staff, and even members of the public.
In a 2016 interview with The Daily Mail, Crowe admitted, “My mistake was letting the pressure of acting success overwhelm me.” This pressure has sometimes resulted in his notorious outbursts.
True to form, Crowe recently found himself in the spotlight once more when he sternly addressed fans vying for autographs outside a Paris hotel, warning them, “Don’t f*****g push in on me.”
Crowe has previously expressed that he is “extremely sensitive” and tends to take matters very seriously, which often triggers his spontaneous reactions.

While he defended himself against ever hitting a photographer he said: ‘But what I’ve done is I’ve saved some of the most stinging verbal barbs just for those sort of people.
‘And they’re shredded in now and wounded and bleeding going back to their editor…and they try and put it, like, a physical thing on the fact that I just ripped them apart emotionally with a single sentence.’

Nineties fighting
Yet even before the height of his fame, it seemed there were stories about his aggressive streak.
At the start of his career when Russell was starring in the musical Blood Brothers in Sydney in 1988, he fell out with co-star Peter Cousens who alleged Russell had tried to punch him in the dressing room.
Then, just 10 years later in 1998, he provoked a fight in Alberta, Canada, after he enraged locals by branding the place ‘boring’.
Then, he was caught on video in a scuffle in a bar near his ranch in Australia where witnesses said he became enraged after two local girls showed no interest.
In 1999, during a nightclub brawl at Coff’s Harbour in Sydney, Russell is said to have bitten a chunk out of his victim’s face and spat it back at him, before being dragged to the ground by bouncers.
Video footage of the fight ended up airing on Australian television but two men faced charges for allegedly trying to extort money from Russell in exchange to keep the tape under wraps.
The case was later thrown out.
On the tape, one of the defendants said to the other: ‘Oh, he just thinks he’s f*****g…the world revolves around Russ—he lives in Coffs Harbour—and he thinks the world revolves around Russell Crowe…He’s just the f****g biggest a*****e you’d ever wanna meet, mate.’
BAFTA outburst (2002)
It should have been a night to celebrate after Russell scooped his first Best Actor Award at the BAFTAs after being pipped to the post for the award in the two years prior.
But instead of the headlines being about his win, the following morning they were dominated by his fracas with a BBC executive, who dared cut short his acceptance speech in the broadcast version of the event.
Director Malcolm Gerrie was pinned to a wall by the New Zealander, who jabbed him in the chest and shouted: ‘You f*****g piece of s**t. I’ll make sure you’ll never work in Hollywood.’
That same evening, a fan who took Russell’s picture received a similar volley of abuse. ‘How dare you take my f*****g’ picture,’ he demanded. ‘Who gave you f*****g permission.’
It then emerged that Russell’s irrational, diva-like behaviour was also on display the previous night when he refused to be interviewed in front of other guests on the Parkinson Show.
Russell later apologised to the BBC exec, who claimed the actor phoned him to say: ‘My language was excessive because I was livid but I behaved inappropriately. I was over-reacting because I felt passionately about it at the time.’
Russell’s record company, however, insisted Russell is simply misunderstood.
After the Bafta controversy, they released a statement saying: ‘Russell is extremely polite and a good-natured character but then it seems he only relaxes when talking about his music. Russell can be a fiery character but he is deeply emotional.’

Restaurant wars (2002)
After the BAFTA drama, later that year the police were called to Japanese restaurant Zuma in London after he became involved in a brawl with businessman Eric Watson.
The fight was reportedly broken up by EastEnders star Ross Kemp.
Bodyguard fight (2004)
While filing Cinderella Man in 2004, Russell got into a fight with his own bodyguard and was forced to later admit: ‘Spud [Mark “Spud” Caroll] and I had a push around after work on a Friday night.
Explaining the ordeal in a letter to Australia’s Sunday Sun-Herald he wrote: ‘The misunderstanding arose when Spud came over to tell me what he thought other people in the room might have been thinking of my conversation [with a female extra on the film who was a friend].
‘I thought he was accusing me specifically of something and I took offence to it. It doesn’t surprise me that I’m overly sensitive to gossip and speculation and heartily sick of other people’s ‘perceptions.’
‘Spud was passing on other people’s ‘perceptions’ and I shot the messenger.’
He continued: ‘Luckily for me, the sequences we were shooting required me to wear heavy post boxing make-up, so you couldn’t tell.”
Spud also defended the altercation as he added: ‘As for calling it a fight, believe me, we have done much more damage to each other playing touch footy.’
Assault charge (2005)
Russell was charged by police with second degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon after reportedly throwing a telephone at an employee of the Manhattan hotel where he was staying in 2001.
He got into an argument at the Mercer Street Hotel in the SoHo district of New York City shortly after 4am and threw the phone at the concierge Nestor Estrade, police said.
The employee, who has not been identified, suffered minor lacerations and was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital, they said.
As a result of the attack, the public mood towards Russell had undeniably shifted and there was even a South Park episode titled The New Terrance and Phillip Movie Trailer revolved around a lampooning of his aggressive tendencies.
Russell said it was ‘possibly the most shameful situation that I’ve ever gotten myself in,’ and pleaded guilty and was conditionally discharged.
Settling a lawsuit before the trial, while the settlements were not disclosed they are rumoured to have amounted to a six figure settlement.
Speaking about the backlash, Russell insisted it had been blown out of proportion.
He told American talk show host Charlie Rose in 2010: ‘I think it indelibly changed me. It was a very, very minor situation that was made into something outrageous.
‘More violence perpetuated me walking between the car to the courtroom with the waiting media than anything I’d done… it very definitely affected me… psychologically.’

BBC Radio swipe (2010)
Russell cut a BBC Radio interview short when the host nitpicked at his English accent in Robin Hood and suggested it had a hint of Irish.
‘You’ve got dead ears, mate, seriously dead ears if you think there’s an Irish accent, shot back Russell at host Mark Lawson.
While Mark clarified it was just ‘hints of…’ Russell shot back: ‘B*****ks… I’m a little dumbfounded you could possibly find any Irish in that character. That’s kind of ridiculous. It’s your show. Whatever.’
After a bit more back and forth and swearing, he teased, “No, I was going for an Italian,’ and while Mark tried to move the conversation along, Russell added: ‘I don’t get the Irish thing brother, I don’t get it at all …’

Azealia Banks police report (2016)
Russell’s career risked threat of derailment once again in October 2016 when Azealia Banks filed a police report against the star alleging he had assaulted her at a dinner party in his hotel room.
The rapper, who was 25 at the time, claimed that he choked her, spat on her and made a racial slur while he threw her out of the room.
The Los Angeles District Attorney’s office dropped the case in December.
She wrote in a Facebook post that Crowe had ‘called me a n****r, choked me, threw me out and spat at me’.
The actor’s representatives said he refused to apologise because he maintains he did nothing wrong.
He said he removed Azealia from the premises because she threatened to physically assault other people there.
Azealia later deleted her post as other claims emerged telling a completely different story from her own.

According to a source, eyewitnesses at the party claimed Azealia was the aggressor and Russell was forced to carry the rapper out of his room during a private party after she became violent.
The eyewitnesses claimed the rapper made a motion to throw her glass after saying: ‘You would love it if I broke my glass, stabbed you guys in the throat, and blood would squirt everywhere like some real Tarantino s-‘ and Russell then intervened and carried her out the room.
In an interview in the following weeks, Azealia was overcome with emotion as she said: ‘Every time, every time something like this happens I’m always like being blamed for, like, wanting this kind of attention.
‘Like who the f*** wants to tell somebody they got spat on? You know, that’s humiliating. And I’m just like really, really humiliated.’
Detailing the events of the night she said ‘it all happened so fast’ and that Russell was drinking and mocked the quality of one of her music videos and demeaned her career.
She said she responded by dissing his career, telling him ‘Well nobody’s checking for you right now… so whoa whoa whoa let’s settle down’
She said that following that she got into a heated exchange with a female guest.
‘I had a glass in my hand because I was drinking’ the rapper explained while denying reports she threatened to cut anyone with broken glass.
Describing the moment she was removed from the hotel room Azealia said: ‘He chokes me, picks me up, throws me out of the room and spits on me.’
At least four guests/witnesses who gave statements during the investigation used the word ‘erratic’ to describe Azealia’s behaviour according to TMZ.
And all accounts confirm that Crowe acted appropriately by removing Azealia from the suite when the situation escalated with the female guest.
They also claim that RZA said she used the n-word and not Crowe.

The Gladiator star held up his hands and quickly asked, ‘Are you listening?’ before continuing, ‘Stay where you are. Don’t f***ing push in on me. I’ll come to you. Give everyone space.’
The Oscar winner added while holding up his index finger, ‘As soon as somebody is a d***, I’m gone. You got me?’
A few individuals could be heard replying with, ‘Yes,’ before Crowe stepped forward to calmly begin signing autographs on posters.
