On Monday, the NYPD commissioner disclosed that progress has stalled regarding Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s prominent plan to remove police officers from mental health-related emergency calls.
During a City Council hearing, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated, “Those discussions have not yet begun,” in response to inquiries about whether the NYPD has engaged in policy change talks with the Office of Community Safety.
Pressed by Council Speaker Julie Menin about potential NYPD budget reductions to accommodate the new office, Tisch responded, “At this time, there are no plans to adjust police funding or staffing.”
Hizzoner announced the massively scaled-down initiative — a mayoral office with just two staffers — earlier this year after vowing to revamp the city’s mental health response system during his mayoral campaign.
Mamdani promised to create a brand new agency that would work around the clock to replace cops on mental health calls and fund the agency with cuts to the NYPD’s overtime budget.
