Episode 5 Shocking Death Changes Things For One Main Character

Warning: Spoilers Ahead for “Dutton Ranch” Season 1, Episode 5 — “Peaceful Find Peace”

Ever since the family relocated to Texas in the premiere episode of “Dutton Ranch,” Carter (Finn Little), a familiar face from “Yellowstone,” has been navigating a whirlwind of changes. Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser) have had to momentarily put their differences aside to fend off the relentless attacks from rival rancher Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening). Yet, it’s Carter who has been profoundly transformed by their new surroundings. His heart has been captured by Beulah’s granddaughter, Oreana (Natalie Alyn Lind), leading him down a risky path of youthful rebellion.

Carter’s romance with Oreana unwittingly sets the stage for a startling tragedy and further upheaval in his life. During a visit to his new employer Dwight (Ray McKinnon) and his exotic feline companions, a police raid results in Dwight’s death right in front of his cherished leopard, Xena. Carter finds himself in custody, facing Sheriff Wade (Josh Stewart) for the second time.

Instinctively, Carter realizes Dwight’s death wasn’t a matter of self-defense, as the arresting officer claims. Sheriff Wade shares this understanding and proposes a deal: Carter’s freedom and his silence in exchange for keeping the incident under wraps from Beth and Rip. With little choice, Carter reaches out to Oreana, seeking solace in her comforting embrace.

Dwight’s unexpected demise is a stark reminder for “Dutton Ranch” viewers that the “Yellowstone” universe doesn’t shy away from brutal endings. Often, it’s the show’s most cherished characters, like Colby (Denim Richards), who meet the grimmest fates. Dwight’s death is a testament to this harsh reality, and it foreshadows potential threats to other characters.

Fans are particularly anxious about the fate of former convict Zachariah (Marc Menchaca). In a conversation with TVLine, Menchaca acknowledged the unpredictable nature of the show, stating, “I think anything is up for grabs.” While he expressed that eliminating Zachariah might not be the best decision, in the lawless and rapidly corrupting world of “Dutton Ranch,” any outcome seems possible.

A Dutton Ranch actor says anything is possible when it comes to killing characters

Dwight’s sudden death is definitely enough to rattle any “Dutton Ranch” fan, serving to remind them that people tend to die painfully in the “Yellowstone” universe. Usually, the most beloved members of a show’s cast — like Colby (Denim Richards) — tend to meet with the most unkind endings. So it is with Dwight, and so it might be for any number of characters.

For instance, fans are terribly worried about the future of ex-jailbird Zachariah (Marc Menchaca). The actor admitted to TVLine that anything is possible when it comes to killing people off the show. “I think anything is up for grabs,” he said. “Sometimes killing off people’s favorite characters is a popular thing to do.” He quickly added, however, that killing Zachariah himself would probably be a bad move. But in a show like “Dutton Ranch,” where the law has no meaning and teenagers quickly lose their innocence, just about anything can occur.
