SANFORD, Fla – In the early hours of Sunday, Sanford police were called to the scene of two separate shootings that resulted in the tragic death of one individual and left another seriously injured. The incidents are currently under investigation, as detailed in a police press release.
Authorities first responded around 3:20 a.m. to a report of gunfire with injuries in the vicinity of Historic Goldsboro Boulevard and Mangoustine Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered a victim suffering from a gunshot wound who was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
As officers were dealing with the initial scene, a second emergency call came through, reporting another shooting near Historic Goldsboro Boulevard and Pomegranate Avenue. There, police found Deion Fields, who had succumbed to gunshot injuries.
During the investigation, detectives identified a person of interest in the vicinity, who was found in possession of a firearm. This individual is currently receiving mental health care at a local hospital.
Authorities have yet to determine if the two shootings are connected. However, preliminary findings suggest that these incidents are isolated, posing no immediate threat to the broader community.
“Our investigators are diligently working to piece together the events of that night,” stated Sanford Police Chief Cecil Smith, who also called on any witnesses to come forward with information.
‘We believe there were witnesses who saw something. We encourage them to come forward and work with us to take these violent individuals off our streets.” Chief Smith said.
