The Murder of Christina Grimmie: Why The Voice Alum's Death Remains One of Music's Most Disturbing Crimes

Although a decade has passed since Christina Grimmie’s tragic death, her story remains a powerful reminder of the dangers faced by public figures.

Grimmie, a former contestant on The Voice, was just 22 when she was fatally shot on June 10, 2016, by Kevin Loibl, who subsequently took his own life. Her untimely death is often compared to those of other celebrities, like Tejano music icon Selena Quintanilla and actress Rebecca Schaeffer, who were also killed by obsessed fans. These incidents continue to fuel discussions about the complex relationship between celebrities and their admirers.

In reflecting on Christina Grimmie’s brief but impactful career, we see the profound influence she left behind. Her YouTube videos garnered millions of views, catching the attention of pop star Selena Gomez, who became a significant mentor. Grimmie even joined Gomez on her tours, solidifying her potential in the music industry.

Selena Gomez, visibly emotional, paid tribute to Grimmie just a day after the tragic incident. “When she was 14, we met her, and my parents and I signed her,” Gomez recalled, as reported by Billboard. “One thing about Christina and her family is that she holds her faith so closely to her. And I think it’s not about a religion or anything or good deeds. It’s just that she had faith.”

Who was Christina Grimmie?

In 2009, the New Jersey native began posting renditions of hit songs to her YouTube channel, which has nearly 4 million subscribers. Sitting at a keyboard in her bedroom, she played piano while singing covers of Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Sia and Demi Lovato.

As Christina’s videos racked up millions of views, she caught the eye of Selena Gomez who became a mentor as Christina joined her on tours.

“When she was 14, we met her and my parents and I signed her,” Selena remembered in a tearful tribute the day after Christina’s murder, according to Billboard. “One thing about Christina and her family is that she holds her faith so closely to her. And I think it’s not about a religion and it’s not about anything or good deeds. It’s just that she had faith.”

Then, in 2014, Christina landed on season six of The Voice, blowing away the coaches with her performance of Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball.” When all four chairs turned, Christina picked Adam Levine.

“People come out here and they sing. You never know what to expect,” the Maroon 5 frontman told Christina after her debut. “You’re more comfortable than I am up there. That is the moment where you realize that this person can be a huge star.”

Two years after coming in third place on the singing competition series, Christina announced that she was hitting the road with Before You Exit for the band’s All The Lights tour.

Their third-to-last concert stop was at the Plaza Live in Orlando, where Christina would have a standard meet-and-greet event with fans after the show.

How did Kevin Loibl kill Christina Grimmie?

As Christina signed autographs, Kevin Loibl produced a pistol and shot Christina in the head at close range, per an Orlando Police Department report obtained by CNN.

The 27-year-old was immediately tackled by Christina’s brother Marcus Grimmie, who was manning his sister’s merch table nearby.

“She would always open up with a hug, because that’s how some shy kids like to interact—and someone pulls out a gun,” Marcus recalled on a 2024 episode of the Dead Talks podcast. “My head is like, ‘Is this a prank? What’s going on?’ Then, I see my sister is on the ground.”

Once the scene registered with Marcus, he snapped into action and tackled Kevin.

“I just run at him. I’m fighting with this guy, get the gun away from him,” he added. “We both go to the ground. Next thing I know, he has a gun in his hand. He just backs up against the wall and he kills himself.”

Christina, 22, was rushed to a hospital where she was pronounced dead just before midnight.

What did police learn about Christina Grimmie’s killer Kevin Loibl?

Kevin arrived at the venue carrying two handguns, two additional magazines and a large hunting knife, Orlando Police Chief John Mina revealed at a press conference June 11. The Chief also noted that while Plaza Live did have security, the personnel were unarmed and attendees did not have to walk through metal detectors upon entering.

“People are not patted down,” Mina said of the venue’s protocols. “I’m told that the security measures in place are the people open their bags and the security people look inside those bags for weapons.”

Investigators discovered that Kevin lived in St. Petersburg, Florida, and was employed by Best Buy in their signature Geek Squad department, according to the police report shared by CNN. A police forensic team attempted to extract data from his cell phone but learned it had been encrypted and that he had intentionally destroyed his computer’s hard drive.

While authorities searched Kevin’s hotel room, a taxi driver arrived—per the report—who revealed Kevin had hired him for a round-trip to Orlando and was expecting to drive him back to St. Petersburg on June 11.

Authorities also said that one of Kevin’s friends claimed he had wanted to enhance his physical appearance—with teeth whitening, hair implants and undergoing LASIK eye surgery—in order to impress Christina, according to the report. The friend added that Kevin watched Christina’s YouTube videos constantly and regularly monitored her social media accounts.

Meanwhile, while Marcus and his family were preparing to lay Christina to rest, another tragedy hit. In the early hours of June 12, a gunman killed 49 people at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando (it was the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history until 2017’s shooting in Las Vegas, where 60 people were left dead).

“We’re preparing to transport the body and Pulse nightclub shooting happens. I just remember thinking, ‘Wow, it’s just like the end of the world,’” Marcus detailed on the Dead Talks podcast. “Orlando is now up in arms. This is the biggest mass shooting to date, happening two days after my sister was killed. It was just a lot.”

How did Hollywood react to Christina Grimmie’s murder?

As news broke of Christina’s death, celebrities shared their stunned reactions, from her earliest champions to high-profile admirers from afar.

Selena wrote on X, “My heart is absolutely broken. I miss you Christina.”

Meanwhile, Zendaya wrote, “Wow….sending all my love to her family and friends, rest up angel,” and Dove Cameron said, “Hardly slept at all last night. Can’t turn my brain off. #RIPChristina.”

Adam, who later covered the costs for Christina’s funeral—per E! News—was gutted by the sudden loss of his former Voice mentee.

“Behati [Prinsloo] and I are absolutely devastated and heartbroken by Christina Grimmie’s tragic death,” he wrote on Facebook. “Our hearts go out to her family. Christina was a natural, a gifted talent that comes along so rarely. She was taken from us too soon. This is yet another senseless act of extreme violence. I am left stunned and confused how these things can conceivably continue to happen in our world.”

The Christina Grimmie Foundation

In the wake of Christina’s death, her loved ones created The Christina Grimmie Foundation, pledging, “To create a community of empathy and support for families affected by the devastating effects of gun violence.”

“Our goal is to honor the victims and to support their families by offering tangible services to help them while they face the aftermath,” the organization says on its website. “The Foundation fosters a community of support, receives donations, organizes fundraising events, and works directly with the families to provide services and a support system.”
