Pope Leo XIV arrived Thursday in Spain’s Canary Islands, one of Europe’s main landing points for migrants, just days after rebuking the nation’s immigration approach in an address to Spain’s Parliament.
The pontiff is scheduled to meet with 1,000 migrants on Friday, closing out his apostolic visit to Spain, which has the sixth-largest Christian population in Europe.
After using his parliamentary speech on Monday to criticize Europe’s migration policies, Pope Leo touched down Thursday in Gran Canaria, part of the Atlantic archipelago, Reuters reported.
Later in the day, he met with migrants as well as officials from international aid groups that support them. At the Port of Arguineguin, he also observed a moment of silence for those who died attempting to reach Gran Canaria. The dock drew international attention in 2020, when more than 1,000 migrants were left stranded there during the Covid-19 pandemic.
