Aussie athlete died on holiday in Thailand after a crash on a wet road

Australian athlete Jemma Stapleton has died in a road accident while on a family holiday in Thailand, after the motorcycle she was travelling on lost control in heavy rain and crashed into a car.

Stapleton, a former junior athletics champion who placed third at the 2025 Stawell Gift, died just two weeks after celebrating her 25th birthday.

According to local reports, the crash happened on Wednesday afternoon near her hotel on Koh Samui. Stapleton was riding on a rain-slicked road when the motorcycle collided with a black Subaru.

Investigators said the wet surface was a contributing factor in the accident, the Bangkok Post reported.

CCTV footage reportedly captured the moment the motorcycle lost traction and toppled onto its side before sliding into the opposite lane, where it struck the oncoming vehicle.

Police said the Subaru was being driven by a 38-year-old Russian man.

Ms Stapleton was thrown more than 20m along the road and suffered severe head injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her family had been riding behind her, police said.
