Stephen Merchant was confirmed as the UK’s richest comedian in September 2023, placing him ahead of major names including Peter Kay and Ricky Gervais.
The actor and writer first found widespread fame after co-creating the British version of The Office with his friend Ricky Gervais. The series debuted in July 2001, and the pair later followed it with Extras, which arrived four years later.

How much is Stephen Merchant worth?
Much of Stephen’s income is said to come from his television production ventures. His main company, SJJM Ltd, holds assets worth more than £25 million, after increasing by £3 million between 2021 and 2022.
However, he previously revealed that he did not always live a life of luxury.
Speaking to The Telegraph in 2010, he said: ‘I remember going to a party once at someone’s house and they had a pool. I thought, ”these people must be Richard Branson!”’
Despite possessing a large fortune, the comic refuted the idea that he might be able to spend more lavishly as a result.
He added: ‘There is this weird idea that you get a bit of money or success and suddenly your life is endlessly being carried around in a sedan chair just throwing caviar away. It isn’t.’.
While some prefer fame over fortune, Stephen recently admitted he would like to turn back the clock and become an unknown again.
He said: ‘The unique thing about The Office was that no one knew who we were, so there were no expectations.
