World Cup group standings, table, schedule: Results for USMNT, Argentina, Brazil and the entire 48-team field

The 48-team World Cup will be the largest in tournament history — and potentially the most difficult to navigate.

With 12 groups of four teams, the expanded format creates a more complicated route to the final than fans have seen in previous editions. Unlike past tournaments, a 12-group setup does not neatly produce a traditional knockout bracket.

To make the numbers work, the top two teams from each group will advance, along with the eight best third-place finishers. That means 72 matches will be played before the field is cut down by one-third and the knockout stage begins.

Group A

Team MP W D L GF GA GD PTS
1 Mexico 1 1 0 0 2 0 +2 3
2 South Korea 1 1 0 0 2 1 +1 3
3 Czechia 1 0 0 1 1 2 -1 0
4 South Africa 1 0 0 1 0 2 -2 0

Those third-place teams will be separated first by points, then by goal difference, goals scored, disciplinary record based on yellow and red cards, and finally FIFA ranking if needed.

In other words, the race to advance could become highly complicated. With so many moving parts and tiebreak scenarios, fans may need to keep a close eye on every result — including the kind of fine margins that could send one nation through while leaving another behind.
