Apple TV’s breakout comedy-horror series Widow’s Bay is heading into the final stretch of its debut season, and it has quickly established itself as one of the year’s biggest TV standouts. With sharp writing, a first-rate cast and an unusually confident balance of laughs and dread, the show has emerged as a serious contender for Best TV Show of 2026.
Set in a secluded island town off the coast of New England, the series centers on the residents of Widow’s Bay as their already fragile community begins to unravel. Mayor Tom Loftis, played by Matthew Rhys, is determined to revive the local economy by drawing in tourists. But his plans are upended when a strange fog rolls in and Wyck Crawford, portrayed by Stephen Root, delivers a chilling warning: the island is “waking up.”
Tom, deeply skeptical of the town’s long-whispered supernatural lore, brushes off the warning. That decision sets off a chain of increasingly sinister events. His assistant Patricia Moyer, played by Kate O’Flynn, is soon pulled into the town’s growing nightmare, while other locals also find themselves caught in a web of unsettling mysteries. Among them are Sheriff Bechir Clemmons, played by Kevin Carroll, and Rosemary, the town’s eccentric genealogy expert, played by Dale Dickey.
The ensemble is further strengthened by guest appearances from Hamish Linklater and Betty Gilpin, adding even more depth to a cast that has been central to the show’s success.
Critically and commercially, Widow’s Bay has made a strong impression. The series currently holds a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes, along with a 93% audience score, placing it among the best-reviewed shows of the year.
When Does The ‘Widow’s Bay’ Season 1 Finale Drop On Apple TV?
Now attention turns to the Season 1 finale. Apple has set the official release date for Episode 10, the season’s final chapter, for June 17, 2026. In practice, however, Apple TV has been making new episodes available the night before, typically at 6 p.m. PT / 9 p.m. ET. If that pattern continues, viewers should be able to stream the finale on Tuesday, June 16, even though it is officially listed as a Wednesday release.
The episode runtime is 48 minutes, though this includes credits. That still makes it one of the longest episodes of the season.
Will There Be A ‘Widow’s Bay’ Season 2?
The good news is that Apple renewed Widow’s Bay just last week for a second season. The bad news is that I’m worried about another curse that has nothing to do with the mysterious island: The Curse Of The Second Season. As much as I want more Widow’s Bay content, I’ve been burned so many times by shows that had fantastic, lovingly crafted first seasons and then rushed, mediocre second seasons. Hopefully that’s not the case here. There’s no word on when Season 2 will return to Apple TV, but hopefully it’s not too long of a gap.Watch The ‘Widow’s Bay’ Season 1 Finale Teaser
You can read my review of Widow’s Bay right here. I’ll be posting a review of the finale as well so be sure to follow me on this blog as well as on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook and let me know what you think of the show. Most folks I’ve talked with love it, but I’ve encountered some detractors as well. I suspect they’re secretly Martha’s Vineyard shills, but I can’t prove it.
