Uptown shooting: Chicago police shooting near Clark and Argyle injures suspect in fatal Ravenswood shooting of condo board pres.

CHICAGO (WLS) — A condominium board president was shot and killed in Chicago’s Ravenswood neighborhood after attempting to uphold a court order barring a man from the property, according to residents and the condo association.

The shooting was reported at about 8:30 p.m. near Clark and Lawrence. Witnesses said the 63-year-old victim, whom residents identified as “Mark,” confronted the suspect after an alleged domestic dispute. The condo association said a judge had ordered the man just a week earlier to stay away from the building.

Residents said the board president was trying to enforce that order when the encounter escalated into deadly violence.

“It’s gonna be tough because we really have a loss here but we’re gonna just have to do it,” condo resident Kurt Munson said.

A memorial is growing outside the victim’s front door as neighbors grieve the loss.

“Our president was trying to enforce that order before the police arrived in a very calm, professional way. And, unfortunately, you can never predict how people react,” condominium resident Dan DiPietro-James said.

Police said that after the shooting, officers pursued the suspect to the area of Clark and Argyle in the nearby Uptown neighborhood, where officers shot him after he allegedly pointed a gun at them.

Nearby residents described hearing a rapid burst of gunfire during the incident.

“Just as quick as the argument or scuffle happened, right after were gunshots. And I heard multiple, very quick, probably ten or more,” said Cynthia Harvanek, who lives near the scene of the police shooting.

Another neighbor, Matthew Wright, said he was aware of prior issues involving the suspect.

“I understand the gentleman, the shooter had some sort of restraining order against him rather recently and he was a little bit of trouble for the building,” Wright said.

While Chicago police have not publicly identified the suspect, the condominium association said he is the same man who was arrested at the complex last week after allegedly trashing his girlfriend’s home and throwing objects off a balcony.

A protective order was issued by a judge one day after that incident. In that case, the suspect faces misdemeanor charges of assault and criminal damage to property. Records also show a criminal history that includes armed robbery, assault and battery charges.

“The system failed in this moment, and as a result, a really good person is dead,” DiPietro-James said. “He will be missed. It is really shocking to have something like this happen at your home… He’s been ingrained in this community.”

“Losing Mark is a very big deal for us,” said condo resident Kurt Munson. “A lot of people in the building are very upset some are angry.”

Police said the suspect was taken to a hospital and remains in critical condition. Three officers were also treated at a hospital and are expected to be OK.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the officers’ use of deadly force, as required by protocol.

“It’s gonna be tough, because we really have a loss here, but we’re gonna just have to do it,” Munson said.
