As Americans mark Juneteenth on Friday, June 19, many workers will get the day off in observance of the federal holiday honoring the end of slavery in the United States. Even so, most major retailers are expected to stay open, though some key services will pause for the day.

The biggest closures will affect financial services. The stock market will not operate on Friday, and most banks will also be closed. Shoppers, however, will still have plenty of options, with many stores keeping their doors open. Because hours can differ by location, customers are encouraged to check with their local branches before heading out.

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates June 19, 1865 — the day Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and told enslaved people that the Civil War had ended and they were free.

For those planning to shop, Walmart will be open and operating under its regular business hours on Juneteenth, according to a company spokesperson.

However, you may run into issues if you’re trying to mail something. All U.S. Postal Service locations will be closed, and USPS mail deliveries will be suspended for Juneteenth. Services will resume Saturday, June 20, according to USPS.
