KYIV – Russian guided bombs hit an apartment building in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, early Saturday, killing at least one person and wounding nine others, including a 6-year-old child, local officials said.

Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said on Telegram that rescuers recovered a body from the debris several hours after the strike.

According to Terekhov, the bombs struck a low-rise residential block in the city’s Kholodnohirskiy district before dawn. Oleh Syniehubov, the head of the regional administration, said at least nine people were hurt, with five of them taken to the hospital.

In a separate incident in Kharkiv on Friday evening, Syniehubov said a Russian drone hit a civilian car, killing a man and injuring the woman who was driving.

Moscow did not immediately issue a statement or respond to the reported attacks.

Ukraine’s air force said its defenses intercepted 92 of 99 Russian drones launched overnight, while seven drones hit targets across three locations.

At the same time, officials in Russia said air defenses had thwarted a drone attack on an oil refinery in Tyumen, in Western Siberia. Regional Gov. Alexander Moor said Saturday that the refinery was not damaged and that employees had been evacuated.

Ukraine has frequently struck Russian oil infrastructure, seeking to reduce Moscow’s war revenue and bring the impact of the invasion closer to Russian communities. Some regions have reported fuel shortages as a result.

In one of the biggest drone attacks since Russia’s full-scale invasion over four years ago, Ukraine on Thursday struck a major Moscow oil refinery for a second time in a week, sending huge plumes of black smoke over the capital and disrupting hundreds of flights.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said Saturday its forces shot down 177 Ukrainian drones during the night. It did not say how many reached their targets. Two drones were shot down on approach to Moscow, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said.
