Police had been tracking the vehicle from Manhattan into the Bronx and were attempting to stop it when the collision occurred, sources said. The impact sent the officer flying.

After the sergeant was struck, another officer drew a firearm and shot a suspect, the sources said. It was not immediately clear whether more than one person had been inside the vehicle.

The injured sergeant suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening, though further details about his condition were not immediately available. A second officer was also brought to a hospital with injuries connected to tinnitus.
