Family fears Lionel Richie won't slow down after health scare

People in Lionel Richie’s inner circle are reportedly growing uneasy that the legendary performer may be reluctant to ease up and prioritize his health, even after a medical scare led to a hospital visit Wednesday night. The 77-year-old music icon was onstage at the Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota, when he suddenly ended the concert early and was later taken by ambulance to a hospital. A source told the Daily Mail that relatives and close associates fear Richie — whose blockbuster 1983 album was fittingly titled Can’t Slow Down — may be putting his commitment to fans ahead of his well-being. “Family, friends, and even his bandmates are definitely concerned about Lionel’s health, but nobody is about to tell him to slow down,” the insider said. “They all want him better and to do what he loves to do.” The source also pointed to Richie’s relentless drive, a trait that has helped keep him a major draw for decades, dating back to his 1970s and ’80s success with The Commodores.

Lionel stays focused on the music

“The Lionel we see on tour and on American Idol is the same Lionel we have known for decades — he’s always moving, always working, and always looking ahead to the next show,” the source added. “And with that, depending on what doctors tell him, his mindset is already focused on getting back out on the road as quickly as possible because that’s simply who he is.” The insider continued, “Music isn’t just his job; it’s what keeps him going. He’s not someone who sits still, and retirement has never really been part of the conversation unless his health leaves him with no other choice.”

Richie puts fans first despite setback

According to the source, Richie is currently more troubled by the thought of fans missing out than by his own medical concerns. “Right now, Lionel is actually more upset that fans didn’t get the full show they paid for than he is about himself and his health. That’s where his head is,” the insider said. “He hates disappointing people and feels terrible that the concert couldn’t continue as planned.” The person close to Richie suggested that, for now, the singer is trying not to dwell on the incident. “As far as he’s concerned, while he awaits results, this is just a temporary setback. He fully expects to be back doing what he loves, and he’s already hoping to make it to Chicago this weekend if everything checks out,” they said.

Richie hospitalized after onstage health scare

“He’s still waiting for a few more answers on what he is dealing with, but he feels that it could be just a bit of an episode over something super serious.” Concern spread quickly Wednesday night after Richie told the audience he felt “dizzy,” sat down during the performance and then brought the St. Paul show to an unexpected halt. Sources close to the star later told TMZ that paramedics met him backstage before he was transported by ambulance to a hospital. The outlet reported that the hospital trip was precautionary, though Richie’s current condition has not been disclosed, and his team has not yet issued a public statement about the concert.

Richie leaves stage due to illness

The Daily Mail has reached out to Richie’s representatives for comment. The incident occurred near the beginning of Richie’s joint Sing A Song All Night Long tour with Earth, Wind & Fire. According to Minnesota’s Bring Me The News, Richie announced an unexpected intermission after performing Three Times A Lady at the piano. His band reportedly exited the stage shortly afterward, and more than 40 minutes after the show stopped, a band member returned to tell the crowd Richie would not be coming back because he was unwell. “Unfortunately, Lionel is not feeling well,” saxophonist Dino Soldo said, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune.

Fans worry as singer appears unwell

“He won’t be able to continue. Additional information will be available.” Richie’s team has still not publicly commented on his abrupt exit from the stage. Fans who were at the concert shared their worry online, with several saying the singer had appeared to signal during the show that something was wrong. Footage from the performance showed Richie stopping to sit down more than once during what became his second-to-last song, Dancing On The Ceiling, and he reportedly told the audience he was feeling “dizzy” while singing. He then remained seated at the piano bench for what turned out to be his final number of the night.

Richie urges fans to sit if dizzy

One concertgoer told the publication that Richie remarked he had “been in this business long enough” to know that “if you feel dizzy you sit down! And if you don’t feel right, you sit down!” Minnesota Star Tribune writer Jon Bream reported that Richie delivered the message more bluntly, quoting him as saying, “When you’re feeling dizzy, sit your a** down.” A video shared Wednesday night on X by journalist Patrick Kessler captured part of Richie’s Dancing On The Ceiling performance, showing him appearing unsteady as he crossed the stage before pausing unexpectedly and sitting on the edge of a large tiered platform.

Richie powers through, seated and singing

Even while visibly struggling, Richie appeared to keep singing during the seated portion of the song rather than leaning on a guide vocal. He stayed seated for under 10 seconds before rising and continuing across the stage. But less than half a minute later, he stopped again and sat on the risers on the opposite side while continuing to perform. According to the Star Tribune, saxophonist Dino Soldo — who later told the crowd the remainder of the concert had been canceled — sat down beside Richie during Dancing On The Ceiling.

Fans disappointed by abrupt concert ending

The publication reported audience members began to file out of the venue as soon as Richie’s band left the stage, about 15 minutes after he announced the surprise intermission. One disappointed audience member called the surprise end to the show ‘horrible’ while speaking to the Star Tribune. ‘I’m super bummed. This was my first time [seeing Richie] and I’m old,’ they vented. The first half of the concert featured a performance from Earth, Wind & Fire, while Richie took the stage for what would have been the second half of the evening. The music icons are currently scheduled to visit 26 cities through August 14, with their next stop at the United Center in Chicago on Friday, June 26.
