Sasha Knight and John DiMaggio on Finn and Jake's early days in 'Adventure Time: Side Quests'

LOS ANGELES — The Land of Ooo is opening another chapter, this time by turning the clock back to the beginning.

“Adventure Time: Side Quests,” which debuted today on Disney+ and Hulu, explores the earlier adventures of Finn the Human and Jake the Dog, spotlighting the brotherly bond that helped define the beloved franchise. Along the way, the pair head out on big quests and cross paths with familiar characters from the world fans know well.

John DiMaggio, the longtime voice of Jake, and Sasha Knight, who voices Finn in the new series, spoke about what it means to be part of the latest return to Ooo.

“It’s got such a huge, huge fan base,” DiMaggio told On The Red Carpet. “There’s such a large audience for this show. I don’t know whose idea it was to bring the show back, but they’re a genius.”

DiMaggio has been with “Adventure Time” since its earliest days, voicing Jake throughout the original Cartoon Network run from 2010 to 2018. He said that kind of history has created a strong sense of connection behind the scenes.

“I really enjoy doing this part. I love to do it. I love the people that I work with,” DiMaggio said. “You know, because when you work on a show for a while, it becomes a family. Just a great bunch of people that are producing the show, writing the show, directing the show. It’s exciting to come back and to do something again.”

For Knight, joining the franchise brings a different kind of excitement, rooted in his own memories of watching the series as a kid.

“I was a fan of the show growing up, and I watched it a lot when I was like pretty young because I have an older brother and he was a fan and he watched it,” Knight said. “So it was always kind of on in our house. I’m just so happy that I get to bring Finn back to life.”

Knight added that stepping into the role felt instinctive. “I’m very similar to him in a lot of ways. And so it comes pretty naturally to me to just be Finn.”

According to Knight, the new series will appeal to both longtime viewers and newcomers.

“What’s really special about this show is that it kind of can cater to everybody,” Knight said. “If you’ve never seen the show and you’re like a young fan and you want to start watching it, I feel like it’s really great because it’s very fun and goofy. And then if you’ve seen the show and you want more, then there’s that too.”

“Adventure Time: Side Quests” is available to stream now on Disney+ and Hulu.

The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of Disney+, Hulu and this ABC station.
