Sony is closing the PS3 and Vita digital stores

Sony is preparing to bring the curtain down on the PlayStation Store for the PS3 and PS Vita, marking a major shift for two legacy platforms. The company says the PS3 storefront will begin closing in select markets later this year, with Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua affected from August, followed by “additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries” in late 2026.

For PS3 and PS Vita users “in all other countries,” the wider shutdown is scheduled for July 2027. Once the deadline arrives, Sony says players will no longer be able to buy new digital content through the stores, though previously purchased games will remain available to download “for the foreseeable future.” In other words, anyone still hoping to add certain titles to their library for the aging systems — with the PS3 and PS Vita turning 20 and 15 years old this year, respectively — still has a limited window to act.

“We know this news may be disappointing to PS3 and PS Vita players who hold a special place in their hearts for this generation of gaming,” Sony said in its announcement. “As we continue to expand the PlayStation experience on newer devices that most of our users are playing on today, we need to focus more resources on delivering the best gaming experiences on these platforms as we look ahead towards the future.”

The move comes as Sony is also preparing to end production of physical PlayStation discs for games released after January 2028. Together, the changes raise fresh questions about how games will be preserved long term as digital storefronts reach the end of their operating lives.
