Walmart is cutting prices on thousands of items, from beef and Coca-Cola to laundry detergent, as the retailer says it looks to help shoppers save on popular summer-season products.
The nation’s largest retailer announced Monday that the discounts will be available across Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations, as well as on Walmart.com, SamsClub.com and through both companies’ mobile apps. The markdowns cover groceries and everyday household goods, along with seasonal items such as grills, sunscreen and lawn mowers.
President Trump welcomed the move and appeared to take credit for the retailer’s decision.
“I have just been informed that one of the biggest, best, and smartest Retailers in America, Walmart, will be lowering prices, by a lot, at my Administration’s request to celebrate our great Country’s 250th birthday,” Mr. Trump wrote Monday in a social media post.
Walmart declined to comment on the president’s post. The company’s own announcement about the price cuts did not reference Mr. Trump.
A Walmart spokesperson said the lower prices took effect last week. In a research note, Vital Knowledge analyst Adam Crisafulli described the announcement as an extension of Walmart’s long-running strategy of highlighting value and affordability for consumers.
Even so, the discounts could benefit both Walmart and Mr. Trump, who has faced criticism from Democrats over the cost of living despite campaign promises to bring inflation down. The Consumer Price Index in May climbed to its highest level in more than three years, pushed up in part by surging energy costs linked to the Iran war.
“It’s a win/win for both sides — Trump needs to improve his messaging around affordability ahead of the midterms, and Walmart loves to occupy the low-price spotlight,” Crisafulli wrote.
