Meta is rolling out the first AI image-generation model developed by its Superintelligence Labs unit. Called Muse Image, the system is now behind image-creation features in the Meta AI app, Instagram, and WhatsApp, with support for Facebook and Messenger slated to arrive soon, the company said in a Tuesday announcement.
Meta says Muse Image also lets users include other Instagram accounts in prompts by using an @ mention, enabling the AI to factor a person’s likeness into the generated result. According to the company, tagging a username allows Meta AI to draw on public photos to create an image, though Meta adds that users will have controls over how others can reuse their content for AI-generated visuals.
Beyond creating new images, users will be able to modify existing visuals with suggested prompts and generate designs for items such as invitations and postcards. Muse Image can also reimagine rooms using a photo sourced from Facebook Marketplace or elsewhere online, and it supports direct photo edits by letting users draw on an image before sharing the result to a feed, story, or chat. The model will also drive 30 new AI effects launching for Instagram Stories in the US, with broader international availability and expansion across more Meta app features expected soon.
