BEIJING – Flooding triggered by Tropical Storm Maysak has killed 39 people in southern China, authorities said Thursday.
The majority of the fatalities were linked to a dam breach in Nanning, the capital of the Guangxi region, where 26 people died, Vice Mayor Ding Wei told reporters at a news briefing.
Maysak dumped record levels of rain across the area, causing reservoirs to overflow or fail and leaving residents trapped for days inside homes and other buildings. Officials had previously reported six deaths.
Emergency crews have deployed drones and thousands of boats in a large-scale rescue and relief effort to reach people cut off by floodwaters. Around 130,000 residents have been evacuated.
