A 17-year-old suspected of opening fire after a Bay Area high school graduation ceremony, killing an 18-year-old and injuring several others, has been located and arrested in Texas.
Fairfield police and U.S. Marshals took the teenage suspect into custody at a residence in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, according to reports. Because he is a minor, authorities have not publicly released his name.
Investigators say the teen is connected to the June 3 shooting that killed Jamario Baker, who was reportedly still wearing his graduation gown when he was shot. Three other victims, ages 11, 20 and 25, were also wounded.
The suspect remains in custody on suspicion of murder while authorities pursue his extradition to Solano County. Detectives said the arrest followed an intensive effort to identify the person responsible.
“Investigators conducted dozens of witness interviews, reviewed hours of surveillance and digital video, analyzed photographs and electronic records, executed search warrants, processed forensic evidence, and coordinated efforts across multiple jurisdictions to develop a comprehensive and prosecutable case,” the Fairfield Police Department said in a statement.
The Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District told KCRA it was “grateful for the diligent work of law enforcement” following the arrest.
“Our hearts remain with the student’s family, friends, classmates, and all those whose lives have been forever changed by this violence,” the district’s statement continued. “While today’s announcement may provide a measure of relief to some, it does not lessen the pain felt by our community.”
The gunfire erupted last month shortly after Sem Yeto High School’s commencement ceremony, which was held at Fairfield High School’s Schafer Stadium.
One attendee said the shooting broke out in the parking lot after the ceremony concluded, as families and graduates gathered to take photos.
