CNN commentator Scott Jennings clashed with a fellow conservative on Thursday night’s episode of NewsNight after former Disney Channel actress and Trump aide Caroline Sunshine challenged his assertion that Iran has effectively been “at war” with the United States for 47 years, a period tracing back to the 1979 Iranian Revolution. The panel was discussing whether Congress should place “guardrails” around Donald Trump’s authority when Jennings, with a note of sarcasm, asked if doing so would create “a world where we’re all rainbows and unicorns with the Iranians.” He added, “They’ve been at war with us for 47 years — 47 years of death to America.” Sunshine, 30, pushed back immediately. “Scott, come on, 47 years?” she said. Anti-Trump Republican Ana Navarro noted that “nobody has been rainbows and unicorns with the Iranians,” but Sunshine cut in, stumbling through her objection: “Why didn’t I learn about the 40— why didn’t— I’m sorry: The first time I’ve ever heard about the 47-year Iran war was like, this year. Like, we don’t teach—”

Jennings jumped in before she could finish. “I’m sorry, you don’t read much,” he said, sending the discussion into a heated back-and-forth. The two talked over each other as tensions rose. “Did you just start following the news this year?” Jennings, 48, added. Sunshine argued that describing decades of hostility between Washington and Tehran as a “war” was “insulting.” Jennings fired back: “It’s insulting? It’s insulting to your intelligence that you have no idea what the Iranians have done.” Sunshine then pressed him: “How many Americans have they killed on U.S. soil in 47 years in the war that we haven’t had with them?” Jennings responded, “thousands,” before continuing, “They have maimed American soldiers.” Sunshine acknowledged, “Yeah, which is all wrong,” while Jennings kept going. “They have attacked American allies, and they have been at war—” he said, as Sunshine repeatedly asked him to explain “why” U.S. troops had “been over there.”
![Jennings continued to explain how The Islamic regime that assumed authority in 1979 has had it out for the West 'ever since [it] came to power.' 'And it is their intention to build a nuclear weapon and use it on us, and use it on Israel, and use it on the west,' said Jennings as Sunshine again attempted to interrupt. 'That is their intention, and they state it every day,' Jennings repeated. 'No,' answered Sunshine. 'They intend to just keep using the Strait of Hormuz.' The pundit maintained that the Iranian regime had 'now learned that they can behave like a nuclear power without ever needing to be one.' 'But, okay, so like,' she continued, collecting herself. 'If we're going to keep going with this, what number of American troops are we willing to commit to keep going, and like, what's your number?' she asked Jennings.](https://i.dailymail.com/1s/2026/07/10/15/109935353-0-Jennings_continued_to_explain_how_The_Islamic_regime_that_assume-a-60_1783694972946.jpg)
Jennings went on to argue that the Islamic regime that took power in 1979 has been hostile to the West “ever since [it] came to power.” He warned that Tehran’s goal was to develop and ultimately use a nuclear weapon against the United States, Israel and the broader West. “That is their intention, and they state it every day,” Jennings insisted as Sunshine tried again to interrupt. “No,” Sunshine replied. “They intend to just keep using the Strait of Hormuz.” She suggested the regime had “now learned that they can behave like a nuclear power without ever needing to be one.” Regaining her footing, she shifted the debate toward costs and commitments. “But, okay, so like, if we’re going to keep going with this, what number of American troops are we willing to commit to keep going, and like, what’s your number?” she asked Jennings.
!['Like, how many US troops are you willing to expend to achieve your objectives? And what amount of money? Because, like, we're not having that conversation.' As Jennings tried to get a word in, Sunshine continued. 'And we need to, because we've already spent $300 billion, [and] we've already lost.' 'Those are the questions we need to- we need to answer,' she said. Jennings offered a rhetorical question as a retort. 'What amount of money am I willing to expend to keep the American people safe from the worst regime in the world? A fair amount,' he asked and answered, making his point. 'Okay. Iran- nobody is like- first of all, Iran does not have a nuclear weapon,' answered Sunshine. She argued that Iranian leaders 'don't want a nuclear weapon. 'And nobody is firing-' Jennings interrupted to address the other statement. 'They don't?' he said, laughing. 'Nobody is firing a nuke at a country that has 5,000 of them. Do you understand?' Sunshine countered.](https://i.dailymail.com/1s/2026/07/10/15/109935349-0-_Like_how_many_US_troops_are_you_willing_to_expend_to_achieve_yo-a-63_1783694972954.jpg)
“Like, how many US troops are you willing to expend to achieve your objectives? And what amount of money? Because, like, we’re not having that conversation,” Sunshine continued, speaking over Jennings as he tried to respond. “And we need to, because we’ve already spent $300 billion, [and] we’ve already lost.” She added, “Those are the questions we need to— we need to answer.” Jennings answered with a pointed question of his own. “What amount of money am I willing to expend to keep the American people safe from the worst regime in the world? A fair amount,” he said. Sunshine pushed back again, arguing, “Okay. Iran— nobody is like— first of all, Iran does not have a nuclear weapon.” She then claimed Iranian leaders “don’t want a nuclear weapon,” prompting Jennings to laugh and interject, “They don’t?” Sunshine countered, “Nobody is firing a nuke at a country that has 5,000 of them. Do you understand?”

The argument continued until moderator Abby Phillip stepped in to redirect the conversation. “I think one of the other things about this, Scott, I heard you earlier saying that if they don’t behave well, they don’t get anything. Why is this always about what they get? What about what we need to get? We need to get the uranium,” Phillip said, moving the panel forward. Sunshine first became widely known for her role on the Disney Channel series Shake It Up. She joined the Trump White House in 2018 after appearing in the 2017 TV movie Mommy, I Didn’t Do It. Her NewsNight debut came in June, and she drew attention that month after a viral exchange with former Bill Clinton aide Keith Boykin over the administration’s immigration policies. Last week, she also sparred with ABC News contributor Tara Setmayer during a discussion about Trump’s unsuccessful effort to end birthright citizenship. Like Jennings, Sunshine identifies as a staunch conservative. The Republican Party has been facing renewed internal divisions after Trump’s failed 14-point proposal to end the Iran War, now in its fifth month.
