For many baseball prospects, the climb through the minor leagues is long, uncertain and often unforgiving. Some spend years chasing a call-up that never comes, while others get only the briefest taste of the majors before returning to Triple-A. Then there are the rare talents who overwhelm every level in front of them and force their way into an MLB future ahead of schedule. St. Louis Cardinals middle infielder JJ Wetherholt has firmly placed himself in that second category — and now, that rapid rise has led to a massive payday.
Wetherholt and the Cardinals have reached agreement on an eight-year deal valued at $112.5 million. The contract also features performance-based incentives that could push the total package as high as $132 million.
From a guaranteed-money standpoint, the extension ranks as the third-richest contract in Cardinals history. Only Paul Goldschmidt’s five-year, $130 million agreement in 2019 and Matt Holliday’s seven-year, $120 million deal in 2010 came in higher. Wetherholt’s guarantee even surpasses the seven-year, $100 million contract Albert Pujols signed in 2004. With Pujols widely expected to land in the Hall of Fame, St. Louis is clearly betting that Wetherholt can become a cornerstone player of similar significance.

The Cardinals drafted Wetherholt seventh overall in the 2024 MLB Draft, signing him to a $6.8 million deal before quickly moving him from rookie ball to Single-A after just one week. His ascent continued in 2025, when he opened the year with the Double-A Springfield Cardinals and earned a midseason promotion to the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds. Along the way, he captured the Texas League MVP Award at Double-A and the International League Top MLB Prospect Award at Triple-A. By the start of the 2026 campaign, St. Louis had seen enough to place him on the Opening Day roster.
As the All-Star break approaches, Wetherholt has emerged as the leading contender for National League Rookie of the Year. Through 87 games, he has produced a .267/.362/.411 slash line with 13 home runs, 36 RBIs and nine stolen bases. If he remains healthy, a push toward a 20-homer, 20-steal rookie season is within reach — an impressive benchmark for any first-year player. His glove has been just as valuable, particularly at second base, while also handling some time at shortstop, giving him the profile of a player who could contend for multiple Gold Gloves over the course of his career.
The agreement ties Wetherholt to St. Louis through the 2034 season. It does not include any club options, meaning the Cardinals will either keep him for the duration or eventually explore a trade if the partnership ever reaches that point. For now, there is no sign that such a scenario is anywhere close.
If Wetherholt sustains this level of production and helps guide the Cardinals back into serious postseason contention, the investment could look like money well spent.
