JAKARTA, Indonesia — Thirteen people were killed and five others injured after a pickup truck carrying wedding guests was caught between two trucks on a busy highway on Indonesia’s main island of Java, police said Monday.
The crash happened Sunday afternoon along the northern coastal highway near Kiajaran Kulon village in Indramayu regency. According to local traffic police chief Undang Syarif Hidayat, the group had been traveling home after attending a wedding in nearby Parean village.
Hidayat said the victims were riding in the open bed of a pickup when the vehicle slowed and stopped near a median opening, apparently preparing to make a U-turn. Moments later, it was struck from behind by a wing-box truck moving in the same direction.
The force of the impact shoved the pickup into the opposite lane, where it was hit again by another truck, Hidayat said. The collision was so severe that more than a dozen passengers were thrown from the pickup onto the roadway.
Police said five survivors were still being treated in hospitals for injuries ranging from minor to serious. Authorities have opened an investigation into what caused the crash.
Fatal road accidents are not uncommon in Indonesia, where overloaded vehicles, limited road safety measures and weak adherence to traffic rules often play a role in deadly collisions.
